Wedding Cake vs Wedding Cake Structure: What's the Difference?

If you are planning a wedding in Sri Lanka, you will hear two terms that sound alike but mean two different things: the wedding cake and the wedding cake structure. Everyone here understands the difference, but couples planning their first big event, and families abroad, often ask. The short version: the wedding cake is what your guests eat and take home, and the structure is what the two of you cut on the day. Here is how each one works, and how they fit together.

What Is a Wedding Cake?

When people in Sri Lanka say "wedding cake", they mean the rich cake served at the wedding, finished in marzipan. It is cut into pieces and wrapped in paper or cellophane, or packed into small boxes, and given to guests. Many guests take theirs home to enjoy later, and it is the part of the cake that everyone remembers. You order it by the number of guests, so the quantity follows your guest list.

What Is a Wedding Cake Structure?

The wedding cake structure is the tiered piece the couple cut on stage, and the one you see in the photographs. Most structures are made from dummy tiers, which are decorated to look like iced cake and built for height and design. Some couples choose a structure made of real cake instead. Either way, the structure is the centrepiece of the ceremony, and the guest pieces are made separately.

Dummy or Real Cake: Which Should You Choose?

At SS Cakes we make both. A dummy structure gives you the most freedom with height, shape and detail, and it holds its finish in the heat of a hall. A structure with real cake lets the couple cut and serve from the tiers themselves. Most couples choose a dummy structure for the look and order their guest pieces separately, but it is entirely your choice. Tell us your venue, your colours and your guest count and we will suggest what works.

How the Two Work Together on the Day

The order is simple. The couple cut the structure, and then the wedding cake is served or handed out, usually wrapped in paper or cellophane, or in a box. So the structure marks the moment, and the wedding cake is what guests actually receive. Because they are made separately, you can plan the design of one and the quantity of the other without either affecting the other.

A Rich Cake to Keep for the Year

We also give the couple a rich cake to keep. Rich cake keeps well when stored properly, so many couples hold on to it through the first year. It is a small keepsake of the wedding, and it is part of how we do things at SS Cakes.

So Which Do You Need?

Most Sri Lankan weddings need both. Choose the structure for the design, the stage and the photographs, and the wedding cake for your guest list. Planning them together keeps the colours, the packaging and the budget in step.
