Decadent Delights: The History of Rich Cake

5 min read20 Jul 2026
A loaf of traditional Sri Lankan rich fruit cake

Rich cake is the dessert almost every Sri Lankan celebration has in common. It is the same traditional recipe we use for wedding cake and Christmas cake, packed simply so it suits any occasion.

A slow cake, on purpose

The fruit is soaked, the batter is made with real butter, and the cake needs time to rest after baking. That is why it is worth ordering a few days ahead rather than last minute, and why a well-stored pack keeps for months.

Why it stretches further than it looks

Rich cake is served in small, dense slices. As a guide, 250g yields about 5-6 pieces, 500g about 10-12, and 1Kg about 20-25. Marzipan is available on request at the same pack sizes.

For birthdays, homecomings and everyday celebrations, rich cake is the straightforward order. See pack sizes or request a quote for a larger quantity.
